Upskilling in systems engineering

This training programme delves into the critical aspects of Functional Safety in industrial environments. As Low As Reasonably Practicalable (ALARP) principles, Failure Modes, Effects, and Criticality Analysis (FMECA), Safety Integrity Level (SIL) Determination, and Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA) are some of the methods and tools that are covered. Participants will gain insights into identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks in industrial processes. The course emphasises developing and implementing safety systems and procedures to ensure compliance with international safety standards, mainly IEC 61508 and best practices.

First half of this training course is tailored to address the increasing importance of securing industrial systems against cyber threats. It encompasses fundamental cybersecurity concepts, risk assessment, threat mitigation strategies, and best practices for protecting industrial control systems. Participants will explore various types of cyber threats, vulnerability, and the implementation of cybersecurity measures. This course is vital for professionals responsible for maintaining the integrity and security of industrial systems.

Other half of this course provides an understanding of Industrial Networking, covering key topics such as network protocols, Ethernet technology, fibre optics, and network switches. Trainees will learn about the architecture, design, and implementation of industrial networks, emphasizing the selection and use of appropriate components for different industrial environments.  

This training course offers an exploration of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs). Participants will gain knowledge of PLC hardware components, software applications, overall functionality, and operational procedures. Using Schneider Electric M580 as an example, the course will cover the architecture and engineering of the PLC and its programming environments. Trainees will understand the PLC's setup, programming, and maintenance, ensuring they can effectively implement and troubleshoot PLC systems in industrial settings.

This training program is designed to equip engineers with an understanding of SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems, using the Wonderware InTouch package as the primary example. It encompasses the study of SCADA hardware, software capabilities, and functionalities. Participants will understand the configuration, management, and optimization of the InTouch platform, learning to design and deploy effective SCADA solutions.
